Thinking about ひまな

Thinking about Japanese word, ひまな, which means "not busy" or "have a lot of free time", Japanese concept, Ganbaru came up to my mind. Davis and Ikeno in The Japanese Mind (2002) mentioned that "according to Amanuma (pp.131-133), on the whole, to have have free time, to do nothing, or not to work gives the Japanese an unpleasant feeling. They tend to think that having free time is wasteful, even shameful, and feel uneasy.
In Japanese mind, we cannot be pleasant when we have so much free time. Most of all the time, ひまな gives us a negative connotation. For example, 「デパートはひまです。」  "This department store is not busy" gives me a bad impression of department store.
